A couple of months ago, I met a travel photographer who is extremely successful on Instagram today. He told me that it was only after 2-3 years of working very hard to create content, that he got his first travel photography job through Instagram. And it was still not paid. Only his trip was paid in exchange of taking photos of the place he was visiting. It took him another one year to get his first paid job on Instagram.
When I said yesterday that I still don’t make money on Instagram, I meant that it’s not my source of livelihood. If it was, I would probably be endorsing brands all the time, not because I liked them, but only because they were paying me to promote them. I have refused several brand collaborations over the last one year either because they didn’t fit in with the kind of content I create, or I simply didn’t like their products. From make-up brands to cell phones, to tea and health food supplements, to camera slings and anti-bacterial wipes, and a lot of things in between, I have refused a lot of collaborations. I want to keep my Instagram as authentic as possible, and I can do that because I am not dependent on it for my livelihood. Of course you can get lucky, and work with brands you love, but it usually takes a very, very long time for that to happen. I have done paid collaborations but they have been few and far-between just for the simple reason that I can’t promote every brand that approaches me. Imagine me posting a photo today with a bottle of amla hair oil, tomorrow with a toothpaste, then with some anti-bacterial wipes...what would happen...you wouldn’t want to follow me anymore, and even though I would make some short-term money, my Instagram would eventually die in the long run. Well, nobody is a fool these days. Followers are intelligent people and will know instinctively whether I am in it to promote brands and make money, or whether I am offering a true and authentic picture of the world as I see it.
And I work as a freelance artist - I love photography, and love doing portraits of people. You can DM me for photo shoot.
