Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is an Oscar nominated masterpiece set in 19th Century China. The fantasy tale explores the story of honour, love and revenge all blended beautifully across a visually stunning backdrop.
▪︎I cannot praise the quality of acting highly enough. The three leads around which Crouching Tiger is centred carry the film and all the emotions upon which it hinges. Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh are the stand outs here and are the true leads even though Chow Yun Fat is front and centre. When conflict eventually arises between our heroines, such is the pull of their aura we do not know who to support, which is only testament to their on screen presence and brilliant story telling by Ang Lee.
▪︎The obvious major draw of the film for fans is the martial arts and action on display and it does not disappoint. The violence in Crouching Tiger is breathtakingly awesome. I was apprehensive at first, worrying that it would become tedius, but even thoughtout the prolonged action scenes every move was unique and spectacular. These are the sort of fight sequences that I wish superhero films or Star Wars would take notice of.
▪︎The McGuffin of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the legendary sword that falls from one hand to another and although the story is simple, Ang Lee directs it in an almost perfect way to which the conclusion of the film releases all emotional tension whilst asking questions at the same time.
▪︎A year either side and I believe that it would have won the coveted Best Picture at the Academy Awards but unfortunately it came up against the phenomenal Gladiator.
