The Battle of Bosworth,
or Battle of Bosworth Field, is the penultimate confrontation of the Two-Roses War, an English civil war between the Lancaster and York Houses during the second half of the fifteenth century. This battle took place August 22, 1485 and saw the victory of the Lancaster Party, whose leader, Henry, Earl of Richmond, eventually became the first king of the Tudor House. His opponent Richard III, last king of the House of York, is killed during the confrontation. Historians view the Battle of Bosworth as marking the end of the Plantagenet dynasty, making it a key moment in the history of England.
Richard III seized the throne to the detriment of his nephew Edward V, aged 12, in June 1483. The boy and his younger brother disappeared soon after, raising the concern of many, and rumors that Richard was involved in the death of his wife Anne Neville in March 1485 still alienate him support. On the other side of the Channel, Henri Tudor, descendant of a house of Lancaster on the decline, takes advantage of the difficulties of Richard to proclaim his rights on the crown
His first attempt to invade England in October 1483 was thwarted by a storm, and he had to wait until August 1, 1485, to land at Dale in southwest Wales without encountering resistance. He walks towards London, gathering support along the way. Richard rushes to join forces and cuts the route of Henry's army south of the town of Market Bosworth in Leicestershire. Baron Thomas Stanley and his younger brother William also lead an army on the battlefield, but stay behind to be sure to rally the winner.
